Bondi Markets

This is my first official post on WildBindi, yay! On the weekends I love to go to Sydney's local markets, each weekend a different one - today it was Bondi Markets. There were some great second hand clothes like mini leather skirts, denim shorts, fringed bags, 70s sunglasses... If you're the kind of girl that has a bohemian jewellery pinterest board than you'll love all the cut out silver cuffs, brass bison skull earrings, and silver dipped quartz necklaces. Compared to other markets, there's also a real local designer presence where you can find  cute playsuits, mexican inspired purses, and graphic singlets.

This is a really cool wall mural in Bondi Beach Public School painted by its students in 1986.

Homemade Sweet and Salty Granola

2 cups mixed raw nuts
1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup rice malt syrup
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup dried cranberries or goji berries
1 tsp salt

I got this recipe from paleogrubs which was super easy and tasty. The only alterations I made were a little less coconut oil and I replaced the honey with rice malt syrup. It's great for smoothie bowls and porridge because it adds a sweet, crunchy texture that's healthy and full of nutrients.

Miu Miu is seriously killing me. Why must they make the most beautiful 1970s inspired clothing and charge it for the equivalent of a round-the-world ticket? Oh the slings and arrows of materialism. I can still admire the beauty of these retro sunglasses, floral dresses, knee-high lace-up boots, embroidered coats, knitted socks, and Mary Jane platforms... This collection is kind of what Blair Waldorf would wear to her extravagant private school, but in the 70s.

I recently decided I was going to stop shopping online, unless it's a local designer, and go back to buying vintage clothes for a while. A few days ago I stumbled onto this dress at my local St Vincent's for $10 which inspired me to dress it up with some of my other goodies.

I stumbled onto We Are 365 and it just blew me away. It's a beautiful blog by two Swedish dreamers capturing their unique bohemian fashion style and travels through the lense of their cameras. They recently spent 4 months in Australia and have inspired me to travel more around my own country. What a life... travelling, photography, adventures, fashion relics, culture... That's how I want to live.

I've never looked at a new collection and literally wanted everything... I love how Spell & The Gypsy can capture the culture of Byron Bay, draw inspiration from the 60s and 70s, and exude the wanderlust of a girl on the road whilst still making it appropriate for any occasion... formal or informal. What a way to celebrate the art of crochet and it's beautiful combination with lace. I've definitely got my eye on the mandala crochet and lace crop top!

Island Lace & Crochet

I grew up in the north shore of Sydney so lot of my childhood memories took place at Berry Island Reserve. Me and my cousins would run around the bush trail, climb gum trees, pick the white blossoms, look for aboriginal rock engravings, dive off the striped sandstone rocks into the harbour, cover every nook and cranny of the island pretending we were on wild expeditions... So when I bought this beautiful lace cape from a local Sydney designer, Tara Grace, I wanted to photograph it at a natural and earthy location... and wallah! I kept everything else really simple with this black 1970s cut-out crochet dress and a few bits of jewellery I've collected while on my world travels. On a side note, right now in Australia we're on the precipice of winter and I'm walking around an island barefoot in lace and crochet... I love this country.

RIAD EL FENN

Photography from El FennStuido Aico, Taegan Reid, and The Lane.

Riad El Fenn is a luxurious boutique hotel in Marrakech, Morocco... "El Fenn" translates to "fine arts" and I can see why! I finally made the journey to Morocco this year and spent almost a week basking in all of it's beautiful culture. Unfortunately I didn't get to go through the golden archways of this magnificent hotel. My budget allowed for a cosy hostel tucked away behind what felt like a hundred random side streets and archways for something like $15 a night. It was so cheap my room didn't even have a door... which was... interesting. Morocco is somewhere I'll definitely be coming back, but this time for a few months. This year was the first time I'd travelled to countries where there were such big religious divides and I was so inspired by the way the locals felt about their situation. This lovely man in a mansion full of carpets I'd stumbled upon told me it didn't matter how everybody felt, what's important is how they got along.

Velvet And Vinyls

A few things came together in the last week that inspired me to do this style post. It more or less came down to my boyfriend's dads vinyl collection though. A collection this good had to be included in one of my style posts. The rest just sort of fell together. The carpet and throw are from our travels around India and Peru, the music equipment is all his (I can't play guitar to save my life, not even Smoke On The Water), and the outfit is styled around my velvet lace-up halter from Lenni's new Strangelove collection. The day turned out to be a nice little two-birds-one-stone situation! After we wrapped things up we had ourselves a chill little space where I could edit my photos and he could jam for the rest of the afternoon.

On a side note, when I was setting things up Jono was like, "you can't just have the amp and guitar there... you need the cable otherwise it looks stupid". So in case any of you were stressing over it the cable is definitely there.  If you're interested in his music check out his band Blacksmith... they're a metal/rock n' roll/blues band influenced by Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and Saag.

Leslie Crow: Heyoka Leather

Interview & Photography by Stylelikeu

"My mum was an artist and my dad was a photographer. There's no sheep mentality... I come from a long line of independent people who do whatever the fuck they want."

Leslie Crow is free-spirited artist and designer who grow up amongst bikers and hippies in the Appalachian Mountains. Leslie didn't have the finances to go to university so she modelled at an art school and listened to the teachers that way instead. One day a friend introduced her to Henry Duarte, a leather artisan, who took her under his wing and taught her how to create pieces that would speak for themselves. She now lives and works from her own ranch, growing vegetables, picking up donkey shit, and letting her inspiration come to life. She created Heyoka Leather with her cousins and best-friends Rachel Avraham and Angela Bruyere almost ten years ago. It's a successful old-fashioned family business that beautifully combines their roots in Native American ceremonies, decadent Hollywood nightlife mystique, and redneck outlaw biker culture. They source all their deer and elk from left-over hides that would otherwise deteriorate in the fields. "It's always been that way...there's no compromise, like if we don't have enough materials to make the order because it's not hunting season, we'll put people on a waiting list". She's a woman with many stories and she relishes at the thought of sharing them all when she's an old woman with lots of wrinkles around her eyes.

This amazing person makes me feel like sometimes I'm not living the life I should be. I went to a good high school and I went to one of the best universities in the world. But this direction has not made me feel closer to where I want to be in life. Don't get me wrong, I'm so grateful for the education I got to have... and handed to me on a silver platter at that. My dad worked his heart out to give me this life and my mum sacrificed her other dreams to stay home and raise me and my brothers. So it feels like it's wrong to have these thoughts, to want to throw away these opportunities in search of other ones. But I kind of feel like I'm stuck in a habit of dreaming and cataloguing all these plans and concepts of my life through blogging... but not actually living it out. I've travelled as much as I can since I finished high school whilst balancing out my education, in fact it was only a few months ago I came back from a 3-month world trip. But everyday now I wake up feeling anxious that I don't have a purpose, that I haven't figured things out, I haven't decided on a full-time job yet etc. It makes me feel uncomfortable but happy at the same time when I read about inspiring people or see the people I love around me not let fear define their choices... they just do "whatever the fuck they want".

This was a really impulsive style post so excuse all the random people in the background (except my grumpy nephew in photo four ... bless him). I normally like to have a concept, a location, some makeup, and an outfit planned out in my head before I do a post. I think this worked out well anyway! On this not-so-fine cloudy day I'd just had a family lunch at Bathers Pavilion and thought Rocky Point Island would be a nice place to get a quick snap of my outfit. This is more on the boho luxe end of my wardrobe spectrum... Before lunch I'd come from Rouse Hill markets with two beautiful sterling silver pieces from Eastern Soul, which explains the whole tribal jewellery situation. A good situation I think. I like to invest in really good quality jewellery and wear them forever or until I foolishly lose them to intoxicated un-organisation. I used to have these gorgeous sterling silver hamsa earrings but they were lost on new years eve. Curse gin. Ah well now I have these amazing Latin Soul Sister beauties!

Nutcote Wall

In honour of Free People arriving on Australian soil this week I've chosen to wear the lace dress I picked up at the pop-up store yesterday! I've also combined it with my absolute favourite FP item I own, their floral fringe kimono. So this week it's all about Australia and FP, and what better place to do my style post than the two-storey Nutcote wall mural featuring native flora and fauna and gumnut babies. For those not born in Australia, gumnut babies are characters from a classic children's book series by May Gibbs. I grew up reading about the adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie so I was really thrilled to see this new wall mural pop up in my neighbourhood. And what's even more amazing is the the local council financed Tim de Hann to paint this tribute, who says graffiti can't be art? I love how friendly and hug-able the Koala looks, ahh yeah you try and hug a wild Australian animal and let me know how that turns out.

When I was younger my parents would take me and my brothers to farms in the country, I loved those holidays... we'd play with all the farm animals and run around in the mud all day. Only problem is me and my older brother got the bright idea to go look for some wild animals. One day while we were wandering around the bush we found a mob of kangaroos and ecstatically approached them. It wasn't long before the whole family started chasing after us. There was no time to delicately go back over the electric fence so it was either a nice dose of electrocution or whatever kangaroos do when they catch you... over the fence we went. Good times.

Winter Magic Festival

Yesterday was Winter Solstice for those of us in the southern hemisphere aaaand it was also the day of the Winter Magic Festival! I've never been before so I decided to head up to Katoomba for the day and found myself a genuine gypsy caravan, yummy chai latte and brownies, streets full of stalls to explore, and easy listening indie/folk/blues busking. I wish I'd started going years before because I think it's edging on the commercial side of things now... there wasn't as much local food and fashion as I'd envisioned but it was still well worth the visit. Next time I think I'll see the neighbouring towns as well like Leura and Blackheath, so many boutique op-shops and homeware stores there! But I'm not going to bullshit anyone, it was also a good excuse to head to a cooler part of NSW and wear my vintage tapestry coat. I found this beauty on eBay a few years ago for only $119 and I'll surely be holding on to it until I die. I paired it with Midnight Rider's gilded palace of sin dress they based off Gram Parsons' nudie suit. It's embellished with marijuana leaves, naked ladies, pills, poppy flowers and a large giant red cross on the back... all symbolizing the downward spiral that eventually led to his death. When Gram died his body was meant to go to his step-dad in Louisiana... his friends feared he was going to use it to claim all of Gram's fortunes so they stole his body from the airport and burned it in the desert. Luckily back then it wasn't illegal to steal a corpse so they got away with it. Now that's real friends.

Man is a genius when he is dreaming.

So I've decided I'm going to start doing mood posts! it's really relaxing for me to catalogue my feelings through curating images. Each one represents a future plan or thought process going on in my mind right now. Overall I've been feeling really good lately... I keep discovering new amazing blogs and instagram's of people who travel the world and share all the precious moments in their life. I really admire dreamers... the ones who follow theirs and if they're lucky get to live theirs out. It's such a stereotype now for people to get to a certain age and give in to life's expectations. I once had a taxi driver tell me his entire life story... his experience at Woodstock, his life on on a farm with a Cherokee woman where he grew all of his own vegetables and food, and I listened to all his thoughts on music and technology today. We're so caught up with technology and reluctant to be spontaneous if we can't share it on social media later. He said to me life is like a flash of light between the womb and the tomb, to never judge anybody, and live free through what you love doing. I never knew his name but he was a really interesting guy...

I've also been thinking a lot about my future travel plans and the way I'd like to go about it the next time. I've done the kind where I stay in a country for two months or do express trips of a few days... What I haven't done is a lot of road trips. The next time I'd like to have a caravan and drive around a country for a few months, meeting strangers on the way, and stumbling onto places you otherwise would have never seen. My best friend moved to Western Australia to study medicine so at some point this year I'd like to see the west coast. Next year I've got the United States on my agenda! I'd like to go to Burning Man, walk around San Francisco, go rock climbing at the Grand Canyon, discover some amazing thrift stores in Williamsburg,  drive down south and get a feel of the whiskey/biker culture... so many plans! I've got lots of work to do and money to save from now.

Before I finish this post I just want to make a note here that I need to read more and get back into my scrapbook. I used to do read and sketch all the time but kind of stopped a year ago... I feel like if I post about it then I will make more of an initiative. Even if you suck at something it doesn't mean that you can't keep doing it anyway.

Love Grows In The Fern

I went to a gig with The Babe Rainbow and a few other local bands last week, there was a really great vibe in the place and the music was super trippy. That or I had a few too many tokes, either way I had a good time. I couldn't help but be inspired by all the psychedelia, so it's translated a lot into my style post this week. Who doesn't love a bit of 70s disco fashion and trippy photoshop editing? I finally decided to pull out my vintage wide-leg playsuit... for something so retro and cool it doesn't get worn nearly enough. I did however choose it as my outfit for my graduation last year. While everybody was wearing sophisticated dresses and black heels I was in my Fredreick's of Hollywood playsuit and a pair of wedges... no regrets.

The location of this post was discovered by accident. I was at the Dear Pluto markets a few weeks ago and had a bit of time to kill  before my boyfriend's gig... so I was just walking around and then found this really cute wall art on Lawson St, Redfern. The motorbike and old busted car add that little bit more charm to the street too. Moral of the story is, walk around and thee shall find something interesting. In my fantasy world this is what I'd be wearing to Studio 54, dancing in platforms to Donna Summer's Love On and On mix with all the 70s legends.

The Year Of The Cat

My parents first met in October, 1977 at the Hotel Europa in Lima, Peru. My dad said my mum first approached him at the bar with a friend and in broken english asked for a cigarette lighter. Their small conversation led to a 22-day romance abruptly ended by my dad's plans to continue travelling around South America and my mum's plans to move to California. They discovered years later that my mum had accidentally called his hotel room before they'd even met. I find fate as a concept really ridiculous but sometimes there are some down right crazy coincidences in life. My dad said it wasn't easy to take her out on a first date, he had to get my abuelito's (grandfather) permission first. My dad had to travel to an awkward part of town and there somehow communicate to him his intentions. My mum was convinced my abuelito would say, "fuera gringo" (go away western tourist), but to everyone's surprise he said yes. She asked him again twenty years later the reason behind his decision, my abuelito said he looked into my dad's eyes and felt he could trust him. On their first date, which happened to be the eve of my dad's birthday, they shared their first kiss in the discoteca (nightclub) to Al Stewart's Year Of The Cat. There are a lot of funny stories that happened in those three weeks that I'd like to share but I have to respect my mum, she's a very private person.

After my dad finished travelling around South America he planned to end up in California with my mum, but time and money weren't on his side. After he returned to Australia he was diagnosed with hepatitis which delayed things and after he recovered he was offered a good job. This put my mum in a difficult position, she had to decide wether to stay in California or move to a strange country on the opposite side of the world. For months they exchanged love letters and even some poetry written by my dad persuading my mum to come. On July 27, 1978 my mum came to Australia on a fiancé visa and my dad picked her up from Tullamarine Airport. Most people at the time would have found their decision to get married after only knowing each other three weeks insane, but this October they will have been together for thirty-seven years.

Looking back at all my parent's pictures it makes me think about time. Before I was even born people were experiencing all these things and leading their own lives. And maybe one day someone might be looking over my pictures and wondering the same thing. I wonder what my pictures will look like and where they'll be...

Walking Through The Clouds

So it's been a while since my last style post but I'll be back to a regular schedule now. Based on these pictures you probably think I've been dropping acid for three weeks... No psychedelic drugs involved, I just felt like being in a yellow submarine dream. And the elements weren't on my side this time... the weather turned on me at Jubilee Park so all I had to work with was a boring brick wall (cue: psychedelic 60s art). So I bought these Miracle Eye bell bottoms a couple of months ago, they're a real homage to the 1970s! One of my favourite things about them is that they're hand-made by the designer in sunny California. You're supporting a tiny little label and the designer's local businesses which is awesome in my books.

Everything else I'm wearing is thrifted! I got this The Doors t-shirt when I was fifteen... I was walking around Greenwich Village and found this amazing op shop with a killer band t-shirt collection. I've got the shop address in one of my memory boxes somewhere hopefully. The owner told me all these amazing stories about the famous musicians he'd met while running the store, especially John Lennon who would shop there during his New York years. I chose this' Light My Fire' t-shirt because I'd just finished studying Apocalypse Now in English and was in this massive Jim Morrison phase. I also grabbed a Russian blue flannel that I'll post about some other time. It has so many rips and holes it actually cost more to get it fixed than to buy a new one... I'M WEARING IT FOREVER.

This weekend I'm off to Western Australia, I've got a few stores and markets on the agenda... fingers crossed I find some vintage goods!
